Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Hausa comedy films have become a prominent genre in the Nigerian film industry, offering entertainment while addressing critical societal issues. By combining humor with social commentary, these films engage audiences and subtly promote moral behavior (Yusuf & Ahmed, 2024). In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, a hub for Hausa cinema, comedy films are a popular medium for discussing social vices such as drug abuse, theft, and corruption. This study explores how Hausa comedy films address social vices and their effectiveness in influencing viewers' attitudes and behaviors.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Social vices remain a persistent challenge in Kano Municipal, despite various interventions by governmental and non-governmental organizations. While Hausa comedy films are widely consumed, their role in addressing these vices has not been fully explored (Usman & Ibrahim, 2023). This study examines the extent to which these films contribute to awareness and behavioral change regarding social vices in the area.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the social vices portrayed in Hausa comedy films consumed in Kano Municipal.
  2. To assess the impact of Hausa comedy films on viewers' attitudes toward social vices.
  3. To explore residents’ perceptions of the effectiveness of Hausa comedy films in addressing social vices.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the potential of Hausa comedy films as tools for social change, offering insights for filmmakers, educators, and policymakers. It emphasizes the importance of leveraging humor to address critical societal challenges.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of Hausa comedy films in addressing social vices in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State. It examines audience perceptions and the thematic content of selected films.
